Nitrous Oxide Dentistry

Maintain oral health without fear

A mild sedative for smooth dental procedures.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

For patients who need assistance relaxing during dental appointments, we offer nitrous oxide. Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a mild sedative medication that helps relieve anxiety. Once inhaled, it can cause feelings of euphoria, calmness, relaxation and even outburst of giggles, hence the nickname.

We administer this colorless and odorless gas through a mask placed over your nose. We control the level of sedation and can adjust it throughout your appointment to ensure the proper dosage. Mixed with oxygen, it enters and leaves your system quickly so driving home from your appointment will not be a problem. Nitrous oxide is safe for use to help children feel relaxed and calm during pediatric dental visits. Nitrous oxide takes effect within minutes to relax patients and it wears off quickly after procedures are completed. Since nitrous oxide is so mild, it won’t leave the patient asleep or disabled. You will be able to respond to any questions or instructions the operating dentist provides.

We generally use nitrous oxide when patients are fearful, uncooperative or anxious. Nitrous oxide is also used during procedures for patients with special health care needs or for patients with an unruly gag reflex. Nitrous oxide is a form of sedation that is usually used for more minor dental procedures. We typically use nitrous oxide for cases of fillings and bondings, dental crowns, veneers, dental implants and full mouth reconstruction operations.

Nitrous oxide has been a safe and reliable alternative to conscious sedation for decades. It has become increasingly common in dentistry in recent years because of how easy it is to administer and consume. After just a few giggles and laughs, you can be on your way following another comfortable, painless procedure. Talk to your dentist today about using Nitrous oxide during your next dental procedure!
