Oral Sedation Dentistry

For an anxiety-free dental experience

Oral sedation is a conscious, moderate form of sedation to relax patients during procedures.

For some patients with high anxiety, a stronger form of sedation might be necessary. Oral sedation utilizes medication in pill form that you will take before your dental treatment. Oral sedation is effective in helping patients relax or manage a gag reflex and even assists with patients who have difficulty getting numb.

The oral sedative we often use is a Benzodiazepine, which is a family of drugs professionally used as antianxiety agents. The most common antianxiety agent used in dentistry is Halcion, a drug similar to Valium and Xanax. Halcion decreases activity in the parts of the brain that control fear and anxiety, resulting in a calm and relaxed mood that will allow the dentist to properly conduct the procedure. The patient normally takes the pill an hour or two before their procedure to make them drowsy. The dosage of the pill can be changed for patients who may need more or less sedation.

We use oral sedation for patients who are anxious or fearful prior to their procedure, patients with a gag reflex that distresses the dentist, or patients who have a fairly long procedure ahead of them. We offer these patients oral sedation for minimal procedures like fillings and bondings, implants and veneers. That being said, oral sedation can also be paired with local anesthesia for more invasive procedures like root canals, extractions and tooth replacements.

Due to the nature of the sedation medication, you will need someone to drive you home from your appointment because the effects of sedation dentistry will wear off throughout the day and you may feel groggy immediately after treatment.

You will remain conscious during your treatment, but will be completely relaxed and lose your sense of time. This is useful for patients who need more extensive treatment because your time in the chair will fly by. For patients who have difficulty getting numb, you can rest assured that your treatment will be pain-free. Reach out to your dentist about oral sedation before your next procedure!
